As the name suggests, oregano oil is derived from wild oregano plants and the key ingredients which make the oil beneficial are carvacrol and thymol. The extraction of the oil is done through a process, without the use of any chemicals or solvents. Apart from containing carvacrol and thumol, the oil is also rich in potassium, iron, calcium, zinc, and magnesium, copper, boron, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Niacin. Let’s now get to the list of the different oregano oil benefits.

Wild Oregano Oil Benefits

Oregano Oil Benefits for Skin
Treating itches, insect bites, burns, wounds, cuts and skin infections are all included in oregano oil benefits. Acne treatment is also done effectively by the use of this oil. Just dilute the oil with olive oil or coconut oil and dab on the acne using a cotton ball. Psoriasis and eczema can also be improved by the use of this oil.

Oregano Oil Benefits for Digestive Disorders
As mentioned earlier, oregano oil is high in carvacrol and thumol and these two components help in treating upset stomach and also help in the digestion process. This is done by the antioxidant property of the oil, which encourages bile production and hence, proper digestion. Best results are obtained, when the oil is taken with a glass of milk or juice.

Oregano Oil Benefits for Sinus Infection, Cold and Sore Throats
Several natural remedies for sinus infection include, the use of oregano oil. Drink a glass of juice daily mixed with 2 – 3 drops of the oil. A mere period of 3 – 5 days is what is required, after which the improvements can be noticed. When the symptoms of cold and sore throat start cropping up, help yourself with a glass of orange juice mixed with 2 – 3 drops of the oregano oil. The oil curbs the progress of such illnesses and also reduces the symptoms in a few days.

More on medicinal uses of oregano.

Other Oregano Oil Benefits
Oregano oil is an effective pain reliever. People suffering from arthritis, joint pain and tendonitis, can benefit from the use of diluted oregano oil. Other benefits of this oil include:

Regulating menstrual cycles

Treating Insect bites

Treating bronchitis, canker sores, muscle pain and warts

Prevents cellular damage

Treating constipation, diarrhea, asthma, athlete’s foot, earaches and dandruff

The reason why I mentioned the use of oregano oil in diluted form is, because if not properly diluted, then upset stomach or abdominal discomfort may occur. Some people might develop some allergic reactions due to the use of oregano oil. The reactions might be skin irritations, rashes or vomiting. Expecting mothers are not advised to make any use of the oil, as the oil tends to reduce the body’s ability to absorb iron. So, those who are the regular users of the oil, must ensure that they also take regular iron supplements. Certain areas of the body such as the genitals’ or that of the mucous membranes or eyes, may feel a burning sensation after the use of the oil. So, make sure that the oil is properly diluted (with olive or coconut oil) before it is used.

In order to reduce the risks of any side effects and get the most of the oregano oil benefits, drink plenty of water. If you are on medications, then it is safe to talk to your doctor regarding the use of the oil, to keep any undesirable interactions from occurring.

Regarding the dosages, 4 – 6 drops of the oil should be mixed with juice, when taken internally. When used topically, 1 – 2 drops should be good enough for treating the affected area, however, it also depends upon the severity. When taken as capsules, 600 mg daily is the requirement. However, the dosages may vary from person to person. So, in order to be certain, get an advise from a doctor, so that, you make the most of the different oregano oil benefits.

Colon cleansing is very much important for a healthy body. This is because it keeps the body free from toxins. In the last few years, even health spas have been offering services for colon cleansing. With more and more people being aware about colon cleansing, it is not a surprise to see this move, which is used as an additional supplement apart from medicines prescribed by doctors.

Why Colon Cleansing is Important

Why is colon cleansing important? Well, the reasons are many. A healthy diet is very much needed for a healthy body and mind. However, due to our fast-paced life, we adopt many habits that are not good for our body. This includes eating junk food. Unhealthy eating habits only add more toxins to the body.

This gives rise to various problems. This is because it affects the functioning of the colon, which results in harmful toxins being circulated in the body. It is therefore necessary to opt for colon cleansing to remove these toxins from the body.

Regular colon cleansing helps to prevent problems such as constipation, bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, headaches, stomach upsets, allergies, etc. Colon cleansing also helps to keep the skin clear and gets rid of hair problems.

The benefits of colon cleansing are such that it helps one to feel positive from within. The body feels energetic which subsequently helps to have an active day.

Apart from following a balanced diet and intake of medicines, there are many other ways you can opt for colon cleansing. This is very much necessary if you are planning for a detoxification of the whole body. However, you don’t have to always rely upon packaged medicines and products that promise to cleanse the body. There are home remedies for colon cleansing that can be incorporated in your daily routine. Here’s a look at some useful home remedies and tips.

Home Remedies For Colon Cleansing

A juice diet can also help as a remedy for colon cleansing. Fresh fruit juices are an effective way to cleanse the colon. The juice must be extracted from fresh fruits for the body to benefit completely. You can consult with your doctor and follow a juice diet to flush out all the toxins from the body. You must ensure you have a lot of water during this period.

There are many other things you need to observe in a colon cleansing diet. Always eat fiber-rich foods. For this, one can follow a light diet. Use recipes that include soups and salads as well as fruits. Include carrots, celery and beet as one of the food ingredients at mealtimes. Fresh fruits and fibers help in the digestion process.

Amongst the naturally safe remedies is Psyllium husk. This is one of the most popular homemade colon cleanse remedies. This husk can be mixed with water or milk. It needs to be consumed at night. Psyllium husk helps to clean and lubricate the insides of the colon.

Fennel and garlic purify the system by getting rid of harmful bacteria. These ingredients need to be included in the diet. Including herbs naturally into the diet will be more effective.

Ayurveda provides many useful ways of cleansing the colon at home. One of the important elements of Ayurveda is Triphala (three fruits). Triphala is used to cleanse the system and can be mixed with water to be taken after dinner. This is a useful and easy herbal remedy, which has many health benefits. It helps to improve the digestion and improves appetite as well.

More and more our children are being left behind when it comes to health. They’re getting fatter, lazier, and now, according to new research, they’re not getting enough calcium.

New findings, published in the August edition of the journal Bone, came to the conclusion that “Increased dietary calcium/dairy products, with and without vitamin D, significantly increases total body and lumbar spine BMC in children with low base-line intakes.”

In this latest research, Michael Huncharek, Joshua Muscat and Bruce Kupelnickb analyzed the data from a total of 21 clinical trials. Totalling more than 3,800 children, the researchers set out to determine how the intake of dietary calcium would affect bone mineral content in children.

The information revealed that those children, who were not taking enough calcium at the beginning of these studies, saw a substantial increase in their total body bone mineral content (BMC). This increase measured out to be about 25x greater than that of children who had already been on a healthy diet of calcium.

Comments from Michael Huncharek MD, MPH, Director of the Meta-Analysis Research Group and lead author of the study.

“Dairy and other foods that are rich in calcium are thought to be important for the growth and strengthening of bones in children and adolescents. In the US, dairy products tend to be the preferred source of calcium since diets that exclude dairy are often deficient in this important nutrient.”

“The new findings show that for those children who have inadequate calcium intake, increasing dietary calcium has a significant impact on bone development. Since most children don’t get enough calcium, meeting calcium recommendations may help to prevent future osteoporosis.”

Many of us would have encountered advertising on television and elsewhere, warning us of consuming a healthy diet high in calcium to ensure that we stemmed the possibility of osteoporosis. A disease of the bone, osteoporosis leads to an increased rate of bone fracture through a diminishing of our bone mineral density.

Given the possibility that there is a way to stem the risk of osteoporosis from an early age, one would imagine just why there are so many children not getting the right amount. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests that each individual should consume at least 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy foods each day as part of their diet.

“It’s never too early to make bone health a priority. These findings continue to support the research that shows milk is an important source of calcium which helps build and maintain strong bones, muscles and teeth in children,” said Ann Marie Krautheim, R.D., senior vice president of Nutrition Affairs for the National Dairy Council.

The Benefits of Calcium Supplements

According to work done by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 7 out of 10 boys and 9 out of 10 girls are not consuming enough calcium needed to maintain a healthy bone density.

However not everyone is able to rely entirely on dairy products for their calcium intake. That is where calcium supplements come in to the equation. If you are unable to get the recommended amount of calcium from your diet, it may be wise to supplement your diet with added calcium.

Check out the below video of Dr. Edward Group III discussing the differences between calcium orotate and calcium citrate… and which one is better for you.

Health care is an important aspect of life and hence it should not be ignored at all. All efforts must be made to keep a healthy body, and a good exercise regime should be followed to keep all the health ailments at bay. There are times though when being a prey to some of the diseases is inevitable, but they can too be cured effectively if treated on time and in a proper manner. These days there is a treatment for almost every health problem, but there are great disadvantages with medicines as well. The reason is that the medicines are made with chemicals that can have great side effects over your body, both internally and externally. In such a case you can opt for the herbal remedies that are safe to use, have absolutely no side effects, are effectual in their treatment and are very affordable too.

Herbal remedies basically are the alternative medicines which originate from various plants and their extracts, and are used for healing a great range of medical ailments. These herbal remedies are obtained via great variety of the natural resources comprising plant bark, leaves, flowers, berries, fruits, vegetables, buds and the plant roots. As the herbal remedies are made from the natural ingredients, they are very safe to use and are also quite effective having no side repercussions at all. In fact, they cater to an amazing range of health diseases incorporating the Chicken Pox, Anemia, Asthma, Blood Pressure, Impotency, Cold, Cough, Bad Breath and Kidney Disorders.

Why is it that so many children are considered to be suffering from ADHD? Nowadays, parents are so quick to prescribe medications to their children, but do we really know the longterm effects these drugs may have on the development of our children?

A new film released today investigates the downsides of ADHD drugs and how you may be doing more harm to the development of your children than you expect.

The new film by international award-winning filmmaker Kevin P. Miller is titled Generation RX. It discusses the issues surrounding the growing trend of prescribing ADHD drugs, antidepressants, and anti-psychotic medications to children and teenagers across the world.

Kevin P. Miller talks with experts in different fields of medicine, ethics and journalism, to determine if corruption between drug companies and their watchdogs actually exists in the FDA. You may be surprised at what you hear!

Generation RX focuses on the compelling stories of real families who received bad advice from their doctors, and as a result, ended in catastrophic consequences. Now they have nowhere to turn for help.

“For decades, scores of doctors, government officials, journalists, and others have extolled the benefits of psychiatric medicines for children. Generation RX unveils ‘the rest of the story’ and explains how this era of unprecedented change in Western culture really occurred — and what price has been paid by society.”

~ Kevin P. Miller

This years most controversial film discusses how thousands of children have been caught in the vortex of mind-bending drugs at the most critical stages of their development. It also examines whether we have forced millions of children onto pharmaceutical drugs for commercial profit, rather than scientific reasons.

Official Trailer for Generation RX:

The trailer for Generation RX makes you wonder if there is a growing culture of medicine and corruption here in America.

Hopefully, this documentary will provide parents with the opportunity to weigh the supposed benefits of these controversial medications against the serious risks they may pose to the development and growth of children.

Parents need to realize that there are serious risks associated with every medication you take or give to your family… But, those same risks are especially important when it involves the overall growth and development of your children. Do the proper research on all medications, prior to taking them.

“Generation RX is a powerful and often chilling eye-opener. Many of the stories stayed with me weeks after viewing, and continue to haunt me now.”

Imagine if you will, a tree so full of nutrients, it can rebuild weak bones, enrich anemic blood and even enable a malnourished mother to nurse her starving baby. Imagine if there was a tree than can purify dirty water, can treat diabetes and control high blood pressure. Imagine if this same tree is drought-resistant and can grow under harsh conditions in countries suffering from poverty and hunger.

There is such a tree…it’s called Moringa Oleifera, known also as The Miracle Tree. There are 13 varieties of Moringa, Moringa Oleifera is the most well known. Every part of this tree is edible, from the leaves, trunks, stems, all the way down to its root. The flowers can be eaten or used to make tea and provide good amounts of both calcium and potassium. The young pods can be cooked and reportedly have a taste reminiscent of asparagus. The green peas and surrounding white material can be removed from larger pods and cooked in various ways.

Moringa trees have great potential in combating extreme poverty and hunger. The nutritious leaves grow quickly, in many different environment types, and can feed people, as well as livestock and sanctuary animals. Surprisingly, the leaves contain complete proteins, which is rare for a plant. And in many developing countries, Moringa is used as a micro nutrient powder to aid indigenous diseases.

The Miracle Tree

Moringa is known in 82 countries by 210 different names, but the one name that fully encompasses all its attributes is “the Miracle Tree”. The indigenous knowledge and use of Moringa Oleifera is referenced in more than 80 countries and known in over 200 local languages. Moringa has been used by various societies (Roman, Greek, Egyptian, and Indian to mention a few) for thousands of years with writings dating as far back as 150 AD.

Aside from the nutritional and health benefits of Moringa Oleifera, its seeds it has the full potential of producing biofuel, cooking oil, personal care products, cosmetics, aromatheraphy, perfume, industrial oil and lubricants. Its oil is comparable to sunflower and olive oil. It is much better than palm oil in terms of properties, for it has a low trans fatty acids. Twelve kilograms of moringa seeds one liter of oil can be extracted and about eight and a half kilograms of cake among others as by products.

Moringa Oleifera Nutritional Facts

7 times the vitamin C found in oranges
Vitamin C strengthens our immune system and fights infectious diseases including colds and flu. Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons are full of vitamin C. Moringa leaves have even more.

4 times the calcium found in milk
Calcium builds strong bones and teeth, and helps prevent osteoporosis. Milk provides a lot of calcium, but Moringa leaves provide even more.

4 times the Vitamin A found in carrots
Vitamin A acts as a shield against diseases of the eyes, skin and heart, diarrhea, and many other ailments. Carrots are very high in vitamin A, with Moringa leaves even higher.

3 times the potassium found in bananas
Potassium is essential for the brain and nerves. Bananas are an excellent source of potassium. Moringa leaves are even better.

2 times the protein found in yogurt
Proteins, the building blocks of our bodies, are made of amino acids. Usually only animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy contain all the essential amino acids. Amazingly, Moringa leaves also contain them all.

.75 times the iron found in spinach
Iron is an essential nutrient because it’s a central part of hemoglobin in blood which carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Spinach is well known for its iron content. Moringa leaves also contain iron.

Moringa Oleifera: The Miracle Tree

Why Haven’t I Heard of Moringa Oleifera before?

While Moringa has been used by many civilizations with the earliest recorded date 150 AD, Moringa has only recently been “discovered” by modern science. According to Monica Marcu, Pharm D., Ph.D., “There are over 500,000 known species of plants on the planet and, to date, only 1% have been studied for medical and nutritional purposes.”

Where Can I Find Moringa?

Not many people know about the health benefits of Moringa Oleifera, and it’s rare to find it in the US. The tree typically grows in tropical and subtropical climates. The Moringa tree is said to have originated in the Himalayas, today it can be found in countries like Africa, China, India and the Philippines just to name a few.

There is a US based company that has managed to turn the miracle tree into an energy drink called Zija. Zija contains all the parts found in the Moringa tree, it’s the first all organic energy drink with no sugar or preservatives added, Zija is also the first company to include the Moringa leaf in a health drink.

Zija is a unique 100% natural blend of five parts of the Moringa Oleifera tree. With over 90 naturally occurring nutritional compounds including 46 antioxidants and 36 anti-inflammatory, Zija is hands down the most nutritious energy drink to date. As little as one convenient serving of Zija every day fills in the nutritional gaps left by your regular diet, even if you eat well.

According to Zija, daily consumption of the health drink yields the following benefits:

Closing Thoughts on Moringa Oleifera

Moringa may be the new kid on the block, where modern science is concerned, but with all its attributes Moringa will not only continue to help people who live a world away from us not only in location but also in need; it will also be integrated into many industries of the western world including food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics.

For centuries our ancestors have used a plant known as Hypericum perforatum, commonly referred to as St. John’s Wort, as an herbal remedy for many ailments, including mental disorders, diarrhea, nausea, ulcers and sleep disorders. But St. John’s Wort is most commonly known as a natural, herbal remedy for those suffering symptoms of depression and anxiety.

According to new research published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, St. John’s Wort is effective at treating major symptoms of depression. This new research backs up previous research conducted in 2005, that came to the same conclusions.

In one of the most comprehensive clinical studies of St. John’s Wort to date, researchers studied 5,489 patients suffering symptoms of major depression. Administering both placebos and St. John’s Wort extract to patients, researchers came to the conclusion that St. John’s Wort was more effective than the placebo at treating mild to major cases of depression.

List of Clinical Studies for St. John’s Wort

This isn’t the first clinical study investigating the effectiveness of St. John’s Wort for symptoms of depression. In fact, here is a short list of studies done within the last fifteen years.

It must be noted that while there is overwhelming evidence supporting the use of Hypericum perforatum, there has been a few studies with different conclusions. In fact, one major study conducted by the National Institues of Health found that St. John’s Wort made no positive impact on patients suffering from major depression.

It is not uncommon for people to suffer small side effects from St. John’s Wort. Some of these side effects include headaches, nausea, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and/or sensitivity to sunlight.

It is also possible for St. John’s Wort to interact with certain medications, such as birth control or antidepressants, you may already be taking, so it is wise to check with your doctor prior to taking any supplement containing Hypericum perforatum.

Things to Remember with St. John’s Wort

The overall effectiveness of St. John’s Wort depends on many variables. Where does the plant come from? Was it grown in organic conditions? Is it a tablet, powder or liquid? These are all going to affect the overall purity of the supplement. The manufacturing process of any herbal supplement can decrease the overall effectiveness of the benefits you may get from the herb. In fact, it is always best to avoid any supplement in tablet form, due to the brutal manufacturing process and because tablets are harder for the body to absorb.

Hypericum perforatum should NOT be used as a replacement to therapy. Everybody is different, please consult with your family, doctor and/or therapist, prior to taking St. John’s Wort. While it does show promise for treating symptoms of depression, it can also conteract with current medications you may be taking. So, please use caution and common sense.

Bottom line on St. John’s Wort
It is very important to do the proper research on St. John’s Wort, or any supplement you take. Most importantly, know who and where you’re buying the supplement from. Look into the Better Business Bureau records for that specific company. Try to find review’s for that product online, to see what other consumers are saying. You don’t want to ingest something that is of poor quality.

Colloidal silver has been used for centuries as a type of antibiotic that can be both ingested and used topically. However, with the advance of medical technology, more effective antibiotics were discovered and the use of Colloidal silver for health reasons pretty much came to an end.

In recent years, colloidal silver has started to make a comeback in the United States. These silver products were being marketed as an effective treatment for simple ailments like colds and flus. Some websites took it a step further, and started promoting colloidal silver products as a “cure” for more serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, psoriasis, even for relieving constipation.

With so many bogus claims floating around about the supposed benefits of colloidal silver, the FDA issued many warnings on the medical use of colliodal silver products, and started cracking down on websites touting these outlandish claims.

Seperating Silver Fact from Fiction

Colloidal silver is routinely sold to the public in misleading ways. What manufacturers do not tell you is that what is actually sold as colloidal silver may consist of three different types of silver:

1) Silver Protein

2) Ionic Silver Solutions

3) True Colloidal Silver

Regardless of which type of silver a product is made up of, it is not uncommon for manufacturers to misrepresent their products by labeling them as colloidal silver.

Silver protein is the second most commonly found type of silver product sold to the public. Silver protein is made up of a protein binder and metallic silver particles. You should watch out for product labeling that mentions protein or mild silver protein because these products are not true colloidal silver.

Most of the colloidal silver products that you are likely to find at your local market are actually made up of ionic silver solutions. Most of the silver that is found in these types of products is dissolved as opposed to being actual particles. It is important to note that ions are not the same thing as particles. The terminology used in advertising for ionic silver solutions can be very confusing for consumers, so it is important that you thoroughly research products and their manufacturers before you decide to try any colloidal silver product.

Argyria Concerns

Clinical studies have shown that it is primarily through the ingestion of large amounts of ionic silver (100 ppm and higher) that a permanent discoloration of the skin occurs. This skin discoloration is known as argyria. In cases of argyria, the skin turns a gray to blue color, and it is a condition that is not reversible.

The majority of silver products only contain 3-20 ppm of ionic silver, an amount that has not proven to be harmful to humans. However, you should be aware that it is possible for smaller amounts of silver to result in the development of argyria in some people. If you have concerns about this, you should take the time to discuss this with your physician so that the two of you can determine your safest course of action.

Check Out this CNN Report about a Man who Developed Argyria:

Making Smart Decisions

When choosing a colloidal silver product for consumption, it is very important that you conduct a fair amount of research so that you will know what to look for on product labels. One of the most important considerations is that of water purity. The type of water used in the manufacturing process of colloidal silver has a direct impact on the quality of the product that is produced. The reason for this is fairly obvious — the use of pure ingredients results in a pure product. If colloidal silver products are made through the use of unpurified water, undesirable contaminants are likely to be present in the final product.

It’s also very important to remember that your health situation is unique to you. So before you take any supplements, not just colloidal silver products, be sure you discuss it with your nutritionist or healthcare practitioner. You want to be sure that your physiology is factored in with the other research you’ve done.

If you find that colloidal silver may be a good option for you, then there are some reputable products to be found. In fact, some products may offer you an even greater advantage than true colloids because its classification is that of an angstrom scale colloid. Because the silver colloids are angstrom sized that means that they are extremely small so they remain dispersed longer in the water than larger particles, and they’re quite easy for the body to process.

When you get sick, you go to the doctor. And the doctor will, of course, prescribe medicines. You will go and buy medicines. You take them, and hopefully, you get well. This is how the health profession goes on nowadays, a cycle of diagnosis and prescription.

If anyone were to give you herbs for medicine, you would probably say that that person was a quack.

But nowadays, studies are being conducted to see if there are really is any merit to what is called natural medicine.

Natural medicine is the use of natural methods, herbal medicines, and traditional practices to heal ailments. Every culture has a form of natural medicine. In ancient cultures, village medicine men served as the doctors of the community, passing on medical knowledge to the apprentices that followed them.

Many categories of the healing methods fall under natural medicine. Among these are traditional medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative medicine.

Usually, natural medicine refers to medical practices that were in place before the advent of modern medicine.

This includes herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, which is prevalent in Chinese, Ayurvedic (or Indian), and Greek medicine.

Upon the advent of modern medicine, many professionals discarded the use of herbs in favor of man-made medicine. The fact that these treatments are based on the healing properties of some herbs was forgotten.

For example, opium, digitalis, quinine, and aspirin all have their roots in traditional medicine.

Natural medicine can be considered as a lost art. This does not mean that it has lost efficacy over time. In some cases, natural therapy is actually better than modern medicine. This leads some doctors to seriously consider and study the possible uses of natural medicine

Before we continue, it is important to stress that not all the natural remedies are legitimate. It would help to only try those remedies which have been thoroughly studied and are relatively risk free.

Take herbal medicine for example. There are many well-documented and studied herbal remedies available. However, only those that deal with minor ailments such as cough, colds, fever, skin rashes, and the like are likely to be recommended by health professionals. These remedies are sometimes superior to synthetic medicine. This is because herbal medicines are less likely to cause negative side effects.

Currently there are numerous organizations that study the effects and advocacy of natural medicine among which is herbal medicine. Some governments and health agencies openly advocate the use of natural methods since they are inexpensive and relatively risk-free.

As their studies compile, more herbs and treatments are added to the list of accepted medicines. However, many herbs and treatments have been proven to be bogus medicine. This represents a challenge for both the user and the agencies because they have to ascertain that the treatments they either use or advocate are legitimate.

Today there are many alternative medical treatments that fall under natural medicine. However, not all of them have been proven to be effective. You could mention homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and other alternative medical treatments. It would pay to consult the experts as to the legitimacy of these treatments.

Natural medicine should also be thought of as an accompanying medicine. Right now, the current collective medical thought suggests that natural medicine be used only to supplement accepted modern medical practices. In that case of minor ailments your expert we actually advise you to take natural therapies instead.

The practice of modern medicine revolves around diagnosing an illness and prescribing treatments for such. Natural medicine is helpful because it suggests that treatment be not necessarily given only when sick. Natural medicine strives to make each patient practice good health habits. These habits include good diet, healthy living, and the regular natural treatment.

It is this same line of thought that leads our parents to tell us to eat our vegetables. Yes, a healthy lifestyle and will do no harm to our well-being. And this is the foundation of natural medicine; may it be massage, herbal medicine, aromatherapy or others.

It is funny but true that science, in its quest for excellence, is studying the knowledge of sages past. This, surprisingly, leads us back to the remedies nature offers. The possibilities of finding remedies to everyday illnesses in natural medicine are encouraging. So staying tuned to studying these remedies is worthwhile until we can verify that these therapies are truly helpful to our health and our society.

Digestive problems, including constipation, have occurred for centuries. The Native Americans relied on herbs and plants to cure their bathroom woes. Because their diets were limited to the foods they could readily find in the woods and on the prairies, they did not always consume enough fiber. While hunting, they might fore go eating for a day or two. What the Native Americans ate depended solely on what was available for hunting and foraging.

As you might suspect, this type of lifestyle led to troublesome constipation now and then. Native Americans learned quickly which plants acted as laxatives to safely ease their constipation and return their digestive systems to a state of normalcy.

Throughout history, people have relied on natural laxatives to ease their constipation. In fact, it is still common practice in Chinese medicine to ingest a mixture of rhubarb root, ginger root, and licorice root instead of over-the-counter medications. The most common Indian (Ayurvedic) natural laxative formula is a mixture of psyllium, flax, and chia seeds steeped in black cherry juice.

Here are some of the most common constipation cures throughout history:

Aloe Vera
For centuries, the beverage form of Aloe Vera has been used as a natural laxative for even the worst cases of constipation. The juice should be made from the powder of the ground up leaves.

Basil Leaves
Many people use basil in everyday cooking. Throughout history, basil leaves brewed as tea have been proven to help reduce gas, reduce stomach cramps, and relieve constipation.

Bottle Gentian
To prevent constipation, many Indian tribes relied on natural laxative plants to support proper digestion. Logically, if the body can digest food effectively, constipation can be avoided. Bottle Gentian was used as a juice to aid digestion and even suppress the appetite.
Buckthorn

Around 2 A.D., a Greek physician touted the use of Buckthorn for a number of ailments. One method of preparation involved using the bark to make a tea, and this natural laxative is still in use today. Also, the tea helps ease related symptoms of constipation as well.

Chamomile
While Chamomile cannot cure constipation or even relieve its symptoms, Chamomile can help reduce gas to aid in easy digestion. If your system is digesting food more effectively, constipation can be avoided before it starts. For best results, steep the chamomile flowers in hot water for at least three minutes.

Culver’s Root
When the Native Americans found themselves battling malaria, they would use Culver’s Root as a natural laxative for the bedridden. Culver’s Root can be toxic, so it’s definitely not a choice for the novice!

Dandelion
Dandelion leaves taste bitter, but many people enjoy adding them to salads or steeping them for tea. Dandelion contains properties acting as a mild natural laxative. While dandelion leaves may not suit everyone’s tastes, they are extremely nutritious and good for the body.

Flowering Spurge
The Mesquakies Indians discovered Flowering Spurge worked as a laxative when ingested as a tea. The root was infused with hot water and drank in the morning to help keep the tribes’ digestive systems regular.

New Jersey Tea
New Jersey Tea was made from the roots of Ceanothus Americanus and turned into a tea. Because tea was hard to come by during the Revolutionary War, New Jersey Tea became a common substitute. During the process, it was discovered this beverage worked as a mild natural laxative.

Peppermint
If your constipation is tied to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, studies show peppermint leaves steeped in tea can help relieve pain and discomfort. This can help the intestines and bowel to relax, which helps the eliminatory process in turn.

Tamarind
The ancient Egyptians believed massive amounts of garlic and Tamarind were best for curing constipation. They also relied on mint to aid with digestion as well as prevent constipation.

Wild Indigo
Native Americans used a mixture of buffalo lard and Wild Indigo to help diminish intestinal troubles. With a reduction of gas and intestinal pain, people were more likely to effectively eliminate waste.

What about over the counter laxatives?

Contrary to popular belief, using laxatives on a routine basis to obtain regular bowel movements can ultimately lead to laxative abuse or addiction. Once laxative abuse starts, many complications can occur and it can be difficult to get the digestive system back on track.

You may experience complications from prolonged or acute laxative abuse, including problems not directly related to the digestive system.

Potential complications include:

Abdominal bloating, pain, or a sense of constant “fullness”

Abnormalities in electrolytes

Bleeding (which can lead to anemia)

Dehydration

Edema

Esophagitis

Gastric Bleeding

Gastric Ulceration

Gastritis

Hemorrhoid irritation

Inability to absorb nutrients properly (can lead to hypoproteinemia, calcium deficiency, or hypoalbuminemia)

Inability to absorb medications

Injury to the intestine

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Liver problems

Melanosis Coli

Metabolic disturbances

Pancreatitis

Perforations and lacerations of the esophagus (Mallory-Weiss Syndrome)

Permanent impairment of bowel function

Ulcerations in the bowels

Weight loss

Is there an alternative to OTC laxatives?

The good news is YES! There is only one product that is both safe and highly effective against constipation…it is Oxy-Powder®.

Oxy-Powder is actually an all natural colon cleanse product that uses oxygen to melt away compaction in your colon. Oxy-Powder has 3 natural ingredients: ozonated magnesium oxides, natural citric acid, and organic germanium-132. This product is by far the most safest alternative to laxatives your money can buy.
